Irene Myrans retrospektive utstilling på SOFT galleri er kuratert av kunstner Runa Boger. Tittelen er hentet fra tekstilen SONATE, hvor Myran har malt logoen til det gamle platespillermerket Die Stimme Seines Herrn, kanskje bedre kjent som His Master’s Voice. I forordet til utstillingskatalogen skriver Boger:

Logoen kan stå som en metafor for Irene Myrans kunstnerskap. Gjennom 40 år har Irenes tekstile verk og hennes kunstfaglige engasjement hatt en klar og tydelig stemme. Hennes billedfremstillinger i sterke, eksotiske farger og stilisering av naturalistiske motiver samt hennes forkjærlighet for ornamentets rytmiske gjentagelser, har markert seg på utstillinger og i offentlige utsmykkinger. I utallige tillitsverv, både regionalt og sentralt, har hun engasjert seg i fagpolitikk og kvinnelige kunstneres arbeidsvilkår og rettigheter.

Myran beveger seg i spennet mellom stofftrykk og maleri. Hun er utdannet ved avdeling for tekstil på Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole (SHKS) i 1968-73. Med stor tegne- og maleglede fant hun i stofftrykk muligheten til å kombinere farger og billeduttrykk med tekstilmaterialets kvaliteter.

Inspirasjonen finner Myran i blomster, planter og dyr, folkekunstens rike fabulering og humor, broderier og folkedrakter. I nyere arbeider har hun beveget seg bort fra mønsterdannelse, men ikke helt. Mønster er fremdeles et viktig element, ofte som rammeverk rundt figurer og tablåer fremstilt i en direkte billedform. Motivene er gjerne minner fra egen barndom og reiser, og gjenstander hun har samlet gjennom årene – glansbilder, fyrstikkesker og frimerker, som en privat ikonografi omgitt av organisk storslåtthet. De fargesprakende og frodige komposisjonene inviterer til refleksjon omkring det å skue tilbake, om tiden som går og en rikholdig kulturtradisjon.

Irene Myran (f. 1948) er født og oppvokst i Oslo og bor i Kristiansand. Hun har hatt flere separatutstillinger, blant annet My Darlings på Sørlandets Kunstmuseum i Kristiansand (2012-13), Agder Kunstnersenter i 2000 og på Kunstnerforbundet i 1995. Hun har deltatt i en rekke gruppeutstillinger, som NK-Sør (2011, 2009 og 2008), på Galleri Format i Oslo i 2008 og Kunstverk fra Sørlandet på Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall, Arendal (2002). Hun står bak mange utsmykkinger, blant annet på Lyngdal VGS (2007), Tinghuset i Kristiansand (2002) og Håkonshallen i Bergen (1994), og er innkjøpt av Norsk Kulturråd, Kristiansand kommune og Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum i Bergen m.fl.

Irene Myran’s retrospective exhibition at SOFT Gallery is curated by the artist Runa Boger. The title is borrowed from the textile work SONATE, on which Myran has painted the logo of the old record label Die Stimme Seines Herrn, better known as His Master’s Voice. In the foreword to the exhibition catalogue, Boger writes the following:

The logo can stand as a metaphor for Irene Myran’s career. For 40 years, she has spoken with a clear voice, not only through her textile works but also through her involvement in art politics. Her pictorial presentations – her bright and exotic colours, stylization of naturalistic motifs, and love of rhythmically repeating ornaments – have made their mark on exhibitions and public works of art. Myran has been a member of numerous committees, both regional and national, and in this capacity, has helped form art policies, ensure the rights of artists, and improve their working and living conditions. This is especially so for women artists.

Myran works with both textile printing and painting. She studied in the textile department at the National College of Art and Design, Oslo, during 1968–73. With her love of drawing and painting, she soon found that textile printing gave her the possibility to combine colours and visual expressions with the textile material’s qualities.

Myran finds inspiration in flowers, plants and animals, in the imaginative breadth and humour of folk art, and in embroidery and folk costumes. In recent works she’s begun moving away from creating patterns, but not completely. They’re still important elements and often used as frames around figures and as tableaux presented in a directly pictorial way. The motifs can be based on memories from her childhood, from trips, or be depictions of objects collected over the years – glossy pictures, matchboxes, postage stamps – all standing as a private iconography of organic grandeur. The colourful and lush compositions invite us to reflect on the past, on time passing, and on a rich cultural tradition.

Irene Myran (b. 1948) was born and raised in Oslo and now lives in Kristiansand. She has held numerous solo exhibitions, among others, My Darlings at Sørlandets Kunstmuseum in Kristiansand (2012–13), at Agder Kunstnersenter (2000) and at Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo (1995). Her participation in group exhibitions includes, among others, NK-Sør (2011, 2009 and 2008), a group show at Galleri Format in Oslo (2008), and the exhibition Kunstverk fra Sørlandet (Art from Sørlandet) at Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall, Arendal (2002). She has produced many works of public art, among others, for Lyngdal’s secondary school (2007), Kristiansand’s courthouse (2002), and for Håkon’s Hall in Bergen (1994). Her works have been purchased by Arts Council Norway, Kristiansand Municipality, Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum in Bergen, and many other public and private collectors.
